Coronavirus and its prevention

Coronavirus update

For last few months, the world has seen the emergence of one deadly virus called ‘Coronavirus’. There are many ongoing rumors and doubts among common people since not everyone has clear idea about this one. So, here’s the basic info about coronavirus from the World Health Organization:

“Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). A novel coronavirus (nCoV) is a new strain that has not been previously identified in humans.
Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between animals and people.  Detailed investigations found that SARS-CoV was transmitted from civet cats to humans and MERS-CoV from dromedary camels to humans. Several known coronaviruses are circulating in animals that have not yet infected humans.”

The common symptoms of CoV which are discovered till now are:

1. Respiratory symptoms,

2. Fever,

3. Cough,

4. Shortness of breath and breathing difficulties.

5. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia,

6. Severe acute respiratory syndrome,

7. Kidney failure and even death.

As this virus is spreading rapidly all across the globe and there is no specific antiviral treatment recommended for 2019-nCoV infection. People infected with 2019-nCoV should receive supportive care to help relieve symptoms. For severe cases, treatment should include care to support vital organ functions. It’s time that we all should know about the basic prevention methods for this. Some important ones are mentioned below.

1. Washing hands regularly, especially after coming back home from outside. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

2. Covering mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing,

3. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

4. Cooking meat and eggs thoroughly.

5. Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing.

6. Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.

7. And most importantly, avoid contact with people who are sick.

This matter should not be taken lightly since it’s becoming a global; threat. Scientists are still trying to find antiviral treatment and till them we should be careful and try to prevent this deadly virus.
